Long term readers of this blog will know our devotion to using container-based technology, especially Docker, to significantly improve software quality through repeatable builds.

In the Autumn/fall of 2020, Microsoft introduced a Visual Studio Code (VSCode) extension Remote – Containers. With one quick stroke, this extension allows you to open a VSCode project within a Docker container.

Getting started with Dev Containers and Docker

There are several different approaches to using Dev Containers. In this post, we shall cover three options:

Using an existing […]

Running the eclipse-mosquitto MQTT Broker in a docker container

I first wrote about MQTT and IoT back in 2012, when I developed a simple C based library to publish and subscribe Quality of Service (QoS) level 0 MQTT messages.

Subsequently, MQTT has grown to be one of the most widely used IoT connectivity protocols with direct support from service such as AWS. Back in 2010, the first open-source MQTT Broker was Mosquitto. Mosquitto is now part of the Eclipse Foundation, and an iot.eclipse.org project, sponsored by cedalo.com.

Another area that has […]

Setting up Sublime Text to build your project

Technical Consultant at Feabhas Ltd

He specialises in C++, UML, software modelling, Systems Engineering and process development.

For many years embedded development was dominated by complex integrated development environments (IDEs) that hide away all the nasty, messy details of a typical embedded software project.

Recently, with the rapidly accelerating adoption of agile techniques in embedded systems, there has been a move away from integrated development environments towards smaller, simpler, individual tools.  Tools like CMake, Rake and SCons are used to manage build configurations.  Container facilities like Docker provide lightweight environments for build and test.  And developers are free […]

Test Driven Development (TDD) with the mbed

One of the most useful fallout’s from the acceptance of Agile techniques is the use of Test-Driven-Development (TDD) and the growth of associated test frameworks, such as GoogleTest and CppUTest, etc.

I won’t get into the details of TDD here as they are well covered elsewhere (I recommend James Grenning’s book “Test Driven Development for Embedded C” for a good coverage of the subject area), but the principle is

Write a test
Develop enough code to compile and build (but will fail the test)
Write the application code […]

With the buzz around the Internet-of-Things (IoT), I felt I needed to get in on the act. For those that follow my twitter feed (@feabhas) you may be aware of the “home project” I’ve been working on. This project is based around the mbed platform to which I have connected a DS18B20 temperature sensor. The overall goal is to record the water temperature of my son’s fish tank, however due to water quality issues, it is currently sampling the air […]
